American Bible Society No Longer Pope's 'Pest'

Issue Date: May/June 2000

"Pests of this sort must be destroyed by all means," said Pope Pius IX in his 1866 encyclical Quanta Cura. He was referring to Bible societies, which he considered dangerous, like socialism and communism.

Barely 30 years later, Pope Leo XIII, in Apostolic Constitution Officiorum ac Munerum, said that any Bible published in the "vernacular" (common language) was "strictly forbidden."

Now, 150 years later, one of those dangerous "pests," the American Bible Society, publishes Bibles that even carry the imprimatur, the official stamp of acceptance from the Roman Catholic Church.

What changed?

The National Catholic Reporter gives us a glimpse of what has happened, reporting that as high as 50 to 60 percent of the American Bible Society staff members are Catholic, including some of the board of directors. Another Catholic staff member works to form links with Catholic publishers, including Loyola Press.

The key to all this? Ecumenical Bibles. Robert Hodgson, the Catholic who heads up the Bible Society's Research Center for Scripture and Media, gives the credit for Rome's acceptance of Bible societies to Eugene Nida, who worked for the Bible Society for half a century, finally heading up the translation department.

Nida is "widely regarded as a pioneer in translation methods and ecumenical outreach," according to NCR. One of his pioneering translation methods is called "dynamic equivalency." This is the method used in all modern Bible translations, and produces a "Bible" which is not an exact translation of the original text, but rather contains the translators' "understanding" of what the author meant to say. According to this principle, it is acceptable to change what the Bible says in order to "adapt" it to a particular culture. Slight wording changes make it easy to "accommodate" different theological views.

Nida had dreamed of Bibles that would be acceptable to both Catholics and Protestants, so he organized a conference in Switzerland in the late 1960s, inviting the Vatican's Congregation for Propagation of the Faith. According to the National Catholic Reporter, "the result was a document on Catholic-Protestant translation ventures," which Nida called "a landmark in ecumenical cooperation." A look at the Bible Society's recent catalog shows that Nida got his wish.

You can still get a King James from them, but you will have to look carefully through their 2000 catalog to find it. You won't have any difficulty finding a Bible with the Apocrypha. It is not difficult to understand why the King James Bible, hated by the popes for centuries, is slowly being replaced by anything else in the Bible Society's catalog.

Rome has not changed its goal, only its method. Open opposition to a common language Bible only fired up the Protestant printing presses. Now, it is much more effective to infiltrate the Bible Societies and maneuver the world into a confusing barrage of "versions" all based on mutilated Roman Catholic manuscripts. Then they can gradually crowd out the one Bible that God has preserved intact, the KJV.

The King James Bible is still hated by Rome because it contains "embarrassing" statements. For example, it prohibits bowing down to idols and serving them (Exodus 20:5).

Catholics prefer a Bible like the ABS Contemporary English Version which says not to bow down and "worship" them. Since bowing, praying and bringing flowers to idols is obviously "serving" them, they are more comfortable with the CEV "worship" since they claim that this is not really worship.

The Word of God is supposed to be sharper than a two-edged sword. When a Bible is produced that everyone can love, even though they are worlds apart in their theology, it can no longer be used effectively to help people trim sin out of their lives.

The article above claims that there was HOSTILITY between the bible societies and Rome, but then, after Rome's emissaries infiltrated the Bible Societies, the HOSTILITY left.

NOW!  Have you noticed our national leaders telling us there is now no HOSTILITY between herself and Russia, and Communist China?  From the example above, can you figure out why that is?

Ever noticed again our example where President Bush said we couldn't accept the FISA laws against warrantless wiretapping of the American people because it was secured in 1978 and was therefore "outdated?"  Remember that he then puts us under The Patriot Act where secret courts, secret trials, government snooping and torture are "vital?"

Question: Did the Communists already have these principles?

Infiltration into our society of Communists, Nazis or people with the same hearts and capabilities is very very homogeneous.  From the highest offices to the lowest, there are people around you who, in the very near future, will transform to demons and will stage processions, massacres and mutilations when society breaks down and the economy falls, all of which are well planned.

CAN YOU TELL A COMMUNIST OR A NAZI WHEN YOU SEE ONE?

It is 1940 and we’re in high school.  The teacher in a history class gives an interactive presentation to her students to test what they’ve learned.  She begins to speak and says:

"A person comes up to you and tells you he believes that a country is best run using secret courts, secret trials, concentration or detainment camps, intrusive government with the elimination of privacy, and lastly, torture.  What kind of a person is he?”

Instantly the students raise their hands eagerly to be called upon to answer.  The first one to raise his hand is picked.  He quickly gets up and says, “That’s either a communist or a nazi!”  The rest of the students don’t look surprised as if he is some genius or brainiac.  The teacher acknowledges that the answer the student gave is correct, then says, “and deception, bloodshed, injustice, tyranny and war always follows these people.”

It is now 1970, and we’re in another high school.  Another teacher gives a very similar presentation.  Just like before, students raise their hands eager to answer.  This time a student answers differently.  She says to herself that the Nazi Regime and Nazism have been destroyed (as she assumes).  She therefore replies, “That must be a communist!”  Again the teacher makes her to understand that she is absolutely correct.  He adds, “and deception, bloodshed, injustice, tyranny and war always follows these people.”

But then years and years have passed.  Strange people popped up claiming we must all debate and immerse ourselves in confusion.  We must all be able to express our honest beliefs without being attacked by some “bigots.”  Then the dreaded people who used their honest opinions and came to the conclusion that rising government scandals, cover-ups and constitutional tampering is proof of a conspiracy, come more into the light.  Then everywhere in society, a babbling throng, eager to destroy those who came to that honest view, but equally eager to make sure the scandals, cover-ups, lies and constitutional tampering continue, spray the air with the paranoid words, “Conspiracy theorist!”  Everywhere they never explain how a single problem to society was ever caused by the dreaded “conspiracy theorist.”

It is now 2007, and another teacher gives a very similar interactive presentation again.  This teacher asks, what is a person who claims that secret courts, secret trials, intrusive government, detainment camps and torture are necessary for security?  Now only a few hands raise.  One student gets up and reluctantly then replies, “That person is a…  a George Bush?”

We then come up with the questions:

What was the attitude of such a communist or nazi in 1940 toward our troops?  How did he feel about them?

What was the attitude of communists in 1970 toward our troops?  How did they feel about our troops?

Now the final question:

What is the attitude of a George Bush toward our troops?  How does he feel about them?  Does deception, bloodshed, injustice tyranny and war follow him too?
